Muriwai Arts Trail 2010
Helen Bowen
I studied art for three years at high school. Instead of going to Elam School of Fine Arts, I went to law school! I have dabbled in painting and print making over the years. Ten years ago I was in the South Island and saw Llew Summers' work in Kaikoura and fell in love with it. After that, I met Lauren Kitts, sculptor, who has been teaching me ever since. I work mainly in Oamaru stone. I take trips to the quarry at Oamaru and have also visited Mount Somers and bought some stone which is a beautiful smooth, more marble like stone which is harder to work with than Oamaru limestone. My garden has Oamaru, Hinuera and Mt Somers stone sculptures. The theme of my work is the beauty of the environment. The sculptures reflect the sea, native bush and birds.
