Gary Smith

British artist Gary Smith spent 20 successful years working as a creative in advertising in the UK before moving to New Zealand in 2006 where he finally discovered the space he had craved. Having spent those 20 years making things in his head on the train to work he had his first exhibition late in 2009. His life-time obsession with paper darts manifested itself in “Suspension of Disbelief: Colourful, bright paper darts of all sizes crafted from balsa wood and finished in enamel are suspended from the wall, some dissect the wall and some fail and hang from their crumpled noses. His second exhibition “The unuttered truths I struggle to hide” is a self-deprecating, humorous look at his heart on sleeve approach to life. Using big bright guns as a metaphor for the seemingly constant trigger happy shooting off of his mouth he typographically visualises his failings.
