Muriwai Arts Trail 2010
Gaylene Earl
I am privileged to live in the countryside at Muriwai overlooking Goldie Bush, where my love and concern for the forested New Zealand landscape seeks expression through painting. I am concerned with mark making and discovery in a work and endeavour to arrest the viewer’s attention and draw them into the painting. I work in oils, acrylics or charcoal on canvas, board or paper, utilising whichever medium, method or style best articulates my vision.
“Skyscape Contemplation Series “ 2010. Focusing on the changing skies I see on waking each morning I have literally stacked a series of horizontal layers as daily views for contemplation. This is the result of 33 contemplative days spent walking under the big skies of Northern Spain, whilst on the Camino Santiago Pilgrim Trail early 2010.
I continue to work with my “Landscape Subdivision Series.” 2006-2009. Referencing early settler and the current ubiquitous subdivision and land use abuse of; subdivide, clear, burn, bulldoze, lay bare - farm and lifestyle, I have used a montage grid format to underscore the continuing dissection of the land. In these intense works I attempt to offer the viewer a variety of ways into the landscape to discover beauty or desolation, a grand or an intimate view.
