Muriwai Arts Trail 2010
Helen O'Connor
My interest in making jewellery began in the late 80’s, when I lived in London where night classes were readily available and easily affordable. By the time I left London I’d had a taste of not only jewellery but painting, stained glass, ceramics, screen printing and photography. I’d been bitten by the bug and knew I wanted more. Retuning to New Zealand I couldn’t believe my luck when I found Unitech Design School offering a 4-year Diploma in the Applied Arts. Formal teaching through such institutions was quite new at the time, and as students we were tutored and mentored by many of New Zealand’s leading contemporary jewellery practitioners. After completing my Diploma, myself and three other design school graduates set up Workshop 6 in Kingsland. More recently I have been working in education, but when time allows still enjoy the magic of making.
